City of Amarillo to consider petition concerning abortion travel

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Supporters of a law letting private citizens sue people they say are enabling travel to get an abortion presented a petition Thursday to the city of Amarillo.

It was part of an ongoing effort to have the city council pass a law permitting the suits.

City Secretary Stephanie Coggins said this is the start of a process.

“So the initiating committee has heard the attorney of the petition and we will receive that petition. What happens next per our city charter, we have 21 days to validate that petition and make sure it matches our charter and state law, the Texas Election Code,” said Coggins.

A last-minute push for signatures on the petition focused on Potter and Randall county Republican offices, according to Facebook posts by Mark Lee Dickson, leader of Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn.
