Project Planet: Bird migration in a warming world

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – When the weather warms, millions of birds flock to Lake Erie to take advantage of abundant resources. This is an effort to migrate toward budding plants, booming insects, and available nesting locations.

With winter 2023-2024 being the warmest on record for Northwest Ohio, it begs the question, “How does this impact bird migration and tourism that comes with it?”

“The warmth really won’t trigger a change in how far birds migrate,” said Kimberly Kaufman, the executive director of Black Swamp Bird Observatory. “What it might change over time is where those birds are nesting. As it gets warmer, the birds that might’ve nested farther north where it gets cooler may start shifting their distribution.”

Birds control pests, pollinate plants, and serve as food for other wildlife. Preserving habitats for these migrating birds is key to helping the entire ecosystem function.
