The Constitution and Justice Commission postponed the vote on the project that legalizes casinos, bingos, jogo do bicho and horse racing due to pressure from the bench opposing the proposal. Senator Irajá (PSD-TO) decided, based on the leaders’ agreement, to call a public hearing to explore the topic.

He has already anticipated his vote in favor of the Bill and highlighted that “it has the potential to transform tourism in Brazil, with the possibility of investments of R$45 billion (US$ 8.9bn) and the generation of almost 200 thousand direct jobs. Tax collection should reach R$18 billion (US$ 3.55bn), boosting the economy.”

Bill 2,234/2022 authorizes the installation of casinos in tourist centers or integrated leisure complexes, such as high-end hotels with at least 100 rooms, restaurants, bars and places for meetings and cultural events.

The text provides for the installation of a casino in each state and the Federal District. Exceptions only for the states of São Paulo (three casinos), Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas and Pará (up to two each).

In addition to some opponents to the approval of the matter, the public hearing will feature Alex Pariente, VP of casino and hotel operations at Hard Rock International; Doreni Caramoni, president of the Association of Event Promoters; Guilherme Luís Dias, specialist in inspection and regulation; Thiago Borges, VP of the Brazilian Association of Resorts, and Manoel Cardoso Linhares, president of the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry. They are all in-depth knowledge of the topic and supporters of the legalization of the activity in Brazil.
