PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) – A job fair Wednesday brought more than 40 employers to the Pike County Library, hoping to find the right fit for open positions around the region.

Big Sandy Area Community Action and the Kentucky Career Center worked with the employers to bring them all to the table, hoping to connect people in the area with available jobs.

Jeff Hensley, Workforce Director, said the event is all about using partnerships to promote the positions people may otherwise not know about.

”So there are jobs, it’s just a matter of people finding them,” he said. “We’re trying to bring the community together- the job seekers and the employers. It’s like a one stop shop.”

The fair saw a packed house upon opening, which officials said is a clear sign that people are seeking work. So, providing a place for those workers to find possible opportunities- and helping them succeed along the way- is what the program is all about.

“We help with resume writings, help people find employment, tuition assistance if you need training,” he said. “Supportive services, work attire, travel assistance if you need to get back and forth to work.”

The event saw representatives from almost every industry, from Food City to Pikeville Medical Center, showing the wide variety of available positions in the region.

“Trying to bridge the gap and help the community,” said Hensley. “So, we want to bring the job seekers in to talk to them one-on-one, go ahead and do their interviews on spot, go ahead and get them hired and just try to give them something to look forward to.”

Hensley added it is all about fitting the pieces together, helping employers and feeding a hungry workforce.

”Seeing how everyone comes together,” said Hensley. “We like to see them succeed and grow, you know, improve their quality of life.”
