CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A recent review done by Policy Matters Ohio on the state of job pay across the state shows that, more many of the most popular jobs, the pay is lagging behind the cost of living for a family of three.

The report looks at the state as a whole, and when broken down by city, Cleveland isn’t fairing very well.

According to the report, four of the top 10 most common jobs in Cleveland paid their median workers so little “They would qualify for and likely depend on food aid to feed a family of three,” Michael Shields with Policy Matters Ohio said.

Those four jobs are:

  • Fast Food & Counter Workers: $27,820 median pay
  • Cashiers: $28,230 median pay
  • Retail Salespersons: $30,530 median pay
  • Home Health & Personal Care Aides: $29,920 median pay

The report also analysis where the job market is in 2024. According to Policy Matters Ohio, “Cleveland is among a majority of Ohio MSA’s which have yet to fully recover jobs from the COVID recession. With 1,067,500 jobs by February 2024, the Cleveland MSA was still missing 15,700 jobs (-1.4%) compared with its pre-COVID February 2020 number”.

So how does this get fixed? The report listed three main objectives:

  • Pay all Ohioans a minimum wage of at least $15 per hour
  • Support working parents with robust childcare
  • Pass a slate of pro-worker policies
