LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)—It’s one of the most impressive equestrian events in the world, and it’s held right in our own backyard.

For 46 years, the Kentucky Three-Day Event has showcased premier equestrian five-star events, drawing riders and horses from across the globe.

Prepping them for the main stage: the Paris Olympics.

“We have three of the top four ranked riders in the world, we have Olympic gold medalists, we have the absolute best. It’s really a preview of this summer’s Paris Olympics. We don’t know who will be riding in it, but we know that whoever it is is riding here this weekend,” said Marty Bauman, Chief Press Officer.

Marty Bauman says that among the crowds are people who have the fate of the U.S. Olympic teams in their hands.

Gunning for one of these spots is defending champion Tamra Smith.

“The Olympics are coming up, and you need to put your best foot forward and hope that you’re one of the three. It’s just another day at the office,” says Tamra Smith, the defending champion.

A weekend at this office consists of riders and horses competing in 3 sporting events. Thursday and Friday are dressage, But the event to watch comes later.

“Dressage is basically ballet on horseback. It’s elegant. It’s beautiful,” said Bauman. “It’s all about cross country on Saturday. They go uphill, downhill, they jump into water, they jump over jumps in the middle of the water. People who have never seen it go ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe this!!”

It’s got a little something for everyone, no matter what your style is.

“It’s just the best weekend all year! They call it that, but it’s just really incredible,” said Smith.
