With EPS Growth And More, Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT) Makes An Interesting Case
The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, ‘Long shots almost never pay off.’ Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Planet Fitness (NYSE:PLNT). While profit isn’t the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it’s worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you’d expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. To the delight of shareholders, Planet Fitness has achieved impressive annual EPS growth of 51%, compound, over the last three years. Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but it should be more than enough to pique the interest of the wary stock pickers.
It’s often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company’s growth. While we note Planet Fitness achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 4.9% to US$1.0b. That’s a real positive.

Owing to the size of Planet Fitness, we wouldn’t expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But thanks to their investment in the company, it’s pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. To be specific, they have US$27m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that’s only about 0.3% of the company, it’s enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
