A video showing the balcony at Detroit’s Fox Theatre swaying during a rap concert Monday evening has gone viral, leading some to question its safety and Ilitch Sports + Entertainment to issue a statement to address those concerns.

The swaying occurred during a concert by rapper Gunna on Monday night at Fox Theatre. The rapper shared a video on social media showing the balcony moving during his performance. In the video, fans can be seen standing and dancing, waving their phones in the air with the flashlights turned on.

The video has been viewed more than 2.2 million times on Instagram as of Tuesday afternoon.

Despite some concertgoers’ fears, the balcony is designed to support fans dancing, and Monday’s movement represented a safe, normal feature of the balcony, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment said in a statement.

“The type of movement seen at the recent Fox Theatre concert is common and expected on free-standing balcony structures, to support audience members actively dancing, as shown during last night’s concert,” the statement said. “This capability is an integral part of the balcony’s structural engineering design. Regular inspections, most recently conducted in April, are completed to ensure the integrity and safety of the structure.”

The historic Fox Theatre dates back to 1928, regularly hosting audiences for performances in its over 5,000-seat capacity auditorium. It was designed by Charles Howard Crane, who also designed the Detroit Opera House, The Fillmore Detroit and the Majestic Theatre.
