Tucson police evacuate south-side shopping area; man taken into custody

Tucson police evacuated a shopping complex and areas around it, at West Irvington Road and Interstate 19, Tuesday afternoon because of reports of a man with a firearm.

The situation began about 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, when the reports came in from the shopping complex at 968 W. Irvington Road, near a restaurant, the Tucson Police Department said in a news release. 

Police communicated with the man said to have the gun and eventually took him into custody at about 5:30 p.m.

He was being taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said in the news release.
