LANSING, Mich. (WILX/WNEM/WLUC) – Now six months out of this year’s presidential election, former President Donald Trump stopped in Michigan. The speech before supporters at a Saginaw County airport comes as new polls show a dead heat in the race for the White House.

It was Trump’s third visit to Michigan this year after making a campaign stop in February and in April after a Grand Rapids woman, Ruby Garcia was allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant.

Speaking to a crowd of thousands of supporters at MBS International Airport in Freeland on Wednesday, the former president kept his sights set on President Biden’s border and economic policies. He also dismissed his legal troubles after being held in contempt in court and ordered to pay a $9,000 fine on Tuesday.

“[Biden] wants to jail his political opponent like they do in third world countries or banana republics,” Trump claimed Wednesday.

While Trump renewed his calls for a debate with President Biden, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer spoke with women in Saginaw County and raised concerns about what a Trump presidency could mean for reproductive rights in Michigan.

“To believe we made such great strides in the last 18 months, yet this is still very much a precarious moment that our rights could be rolled back,” Gov. Whitmer said.

Trump told supporters at Wednesday’s rally that allowing states to make their own decisions on abortion will bring the country together.

He also criticized the Biden Administration’s push for electric vehicles and promised to return auto jobs to the state.

“I’ll terminate Joe Biden’s radical plan to terminate Michigan’s economy by repealing his insane electric vehicle mandate. But I’m going to turn it around, I’m bringing the car industry back to Michigan,” Trump said.

With polls showing a tight race in Michigan, Trump says he has plans to return to the state, while President Biden announced he will be making a stop in Michigan this month. He will be visiting Detroit on May 19.
