ST. AUGUSTINE, Calif. — Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball led by as many as 19 before holding on to defeat Southern Miss 74-67 at the Jacksonville Classic Monday.
After establishing its 19-point advantage with 12:40 left in the second half, Fullerton saw its lead get trimmed to two, 55-53, with 4:42 left. But the Titans made a couple of timely baskets with the shot clock winding down, as DJ Brewton hit a contested jumper and Grayson Carper hit a left-wing trey to push Fullerton’s lead to seven, 62-55, with 2:01 to go. Southern Miss elected to foul down the stretch, but the Titans went 10-of-12 from the line over the final minutes to hold on for the 74-67 win.
Max Jones led Fullerton with a team-high 19 points, a career-high seven assists and three rebounds, while Brewton had 15 points and four boards. Donovan Oday added 11 points and five rebounds and Carper tallied nine points and seven boards.
The Titans shot 52.3% from the floor, including 42.9% from three, while holding the Golden Eagles to a 40.0% shooting clip.
Fullerton jumped out to a quick start, as Jones found Lee for a lay-in and Oday hit a three to put the Titans up 11-7. Jones hit a triple of his own to give Fullerton a 20-10 advantage halfway through the first period. The Titans led by as many as 17 in the first after a Kendrick De Luna tip-in and went on to take a 34-25 advantage into the locker room.
Jones opened the second half with a three-point play before Lee found the basket down low to put the Titans back up 15, 43-28. Jones hit another triple and Oday knocked down a jumper to give Fullerton its 19-point lead, 52-33, with 12:40 to go before eventually holding on for the 74-67 win.
