Night on the Square

The Madison Night Market is back and bigger than ever. The market, which typically takes place on State Street and Gilman Street, is expanding this year to also include part of Capitol Square. The first of the monthly events takes place on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring more than 100 artisans and food vendors, plus live music.

Story Pirates




FRIDAY, MAY 10

Podcast pirates

Grab the kids on Friday and head to the Barrymore Theatre, 2090 Atwood Ave., for an evening with the folks behind the award-winning, chart-topping family podcast Story Pirates, which believes that all kids are “creative geniuses.” Like the podcast, “The Amazing Adventure Tour” will turn ideas submitted by kids into songs and sketch comedy pieces. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the show starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available online starting at $16.50.

Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade Carefully

Invade carefully

Described variously as an onstage sitcom, “a story about an alien invader learning to love the patriarchy” and a tale of “printers being the worst,” Madison Theatre Guild’s spring production brings fast-paced British comedy to the Bartell Theatre, 113 E. Mifflin St. “Dr. Who” writer Eddie Robson wrote “Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade Carefully,” running on the Evjue Stage for the next three weekends. Tickets cost $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors.

Miller’s high life

Progressive radio host Stephanie Miller brings her “Sexy Liberal Saves the World” tour to the Barrymore Theatre, 2090 Atwood Ave. at 8 p.m. Saturday. Miller and show regulars John Fugelsang, Hal Sparks and Frangela will show that politics and comedy can mix, even in a pivotal election year. Tickets are $36.50 and up, with discounts for students.

Real Americans

TUESDAY, MAY 14

Let’s get ‘Real’

Rachel Khong’s new novel, “Real Americans,” is a family saga following the lives of three generations of Chinese Americans. She’ll talk about it with writer Ada Zhang at the last Wisconsin Book Festival event of the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Madison Public Library’s Central Branch, 201 W. Mifflin St. The event is free.
