Sonam Kapoor on how her fashion choices evolved post motherhood: ‘Initially I was traumatised…’

Motherhood changes a lot of things for women — both physically and mentally, and it was no different for Sonam Kapoor, who gave birth to her first child in 2022.

During the conversation, the duo extensively spoke about the challenges of adapting their styles and fashion choices based on these changes. “Honestly, initially, I was traumatised in a way where even though people say it, you feel like once the child comes out, you’ll be back to normal. But you’re so obsessed with your baby you’re really not thinking about working out or eating right and stuff like that.”

She added that she took it very slow initially, “ because you need to adjust with the new you. Everything in your life changes… your relationship with yourself changes.”

Reflecting on how her style has evolved post-motherhood, Sonam Kapoor remarks, “I was like I need to accept this version of myself. I’m never going to look the way I looked at 16, I’m never going to look the way I looked at 25, and now I’m 38.”

Festive offer

Once that acceptance came, she started dressing for her body type. As a young woman, she remembers wearing a lot of loose-fitting bohemian clothes, but post-pregnancy, she knew that had to change. “I always dressed a little more Bohemian and the skinnier you are the better it looks,” she said. “That had to change. I had to wear a little more tight-fitting clothes to accentuate the new curves that I’ve gained.”

Khushboo Sethi, co-founder at Jisora tells indianexpress.com, “Embracing physical changes post-motherhood is pivotal.”

New mothers experiencing body changes post-pregnancy, she says, can gracefully adapt their personal style by embracing flexibility and comfort without sacrificing their grace and style. Newbie moms can always opt for soft, stretchable fabrics like jerseys or modals that can accommodate changes in their body shape.

Tips for embracing and accentuating postpartum body and curves

Sethi gives the following key fashion tips for embracing and accentuating postpartum body and curves while maintaining comfort and confidence:

Choose flexible fabrics

Opt for clothes made from stretchy, breathable fabrics like jersey or modal. These materials adapt to your changing body and provide comfort without sacrificing style.

Embrace high-waisted bottoms

High-waisted pants or skirts can offer support to the abdomen and streamline your silhouette, creating a smooth line and enhancing comfort.

Layer with style

Layering can be both practical and fashionable. A nursing tank under a cardigan or blazer allows for easy access while breastfeeding and adds depth to your outfit.

Invest in supportive undergarments

A good-quality, supportive bra and shapewear designed for postpartum bodies can boost confidence and comfort, ensuring your clothes fit better.

Flaunt with wrap dresses

Wrap dresses are ideal for postpartum wear as they are adjustable, can accentuate postpartum body and curves, and offer easy nursing access.

Bold patterns and textures

Utilise bold patterns and textures to draw attention to areas you want to highlight. These can also help in camouflaging parts you’re less comfortable with, balancing your overall look.

How fashion can choices contribute to a new mother’s sense of empowerment

Fashion choices during the postpartum period play a pivotal role in a new mother’s sense of empowerment and self-expression. Comfortable yet stylish clothing that accommodates the body’s changes can boost confidence and morale.

“Versatile pieces that transition from maternity to postpartum allow mothers to embrace their evolving identity while feeling comfortable and chic. Moreover, selecting garments and silhouettes that reflect personal style and preferences fosters a sense of individuality amid the demands of motherhood,” Sethi explains.

By prioritising self-care through fashion, she promises that new mothers can reclaim their sense of self and navigate the postpartum journey with confidence and grace.
