One of New York’s most prominent bagel operators is heading west, landing in a California suburb of all places.
Bagel Boss, the nearly 50-year-old bagel chain known for feeding generations of mostly Long Islanders, is set to land in Burbank, Calif., the standalone suburban city in greater Los Angeles. Bagel Boss ownership confirmed the expansion to California with a small post on its website, saying the new shop would be opening “in the Magnolia Park section of Burbank, CA and will be opening in a few months.” The official address is 3116 W. Magnolia Boulevard.
What’s more, the bagel operation plans to bring in its full menu of options, from various bagel flavors to sandwiches like the East Coast staple bacon, egg and cheese. While not impossible to find in Los Angeles, the arrival of a new BEC breakfast sandwich contender is sure to be a big deal in suddenly bagel-saturated California. The arrival of Boss Bagels comes as more and more East Coast companies have begun to test the Southern California business waters, including Staten Island pizza legend Denino’s. New York City slice king Scarr’s Pizza is also set to open in Los Angeles in the not-too-distant future.
While the arrival of an everyday standard bagel shop like Bagel Boss (with its trusted name and long pedigree) is good news for California, the state has no shortage of high-end bagel options, including Courage Bagels in Los Angeles and Midnite Bagel in San Francisco, both of which were shouted out in a 2021 New York Times article proclaiming that the nation’s best bagels were found out west. Sorry New York, but California really is a place for great bagels these days — and now with Bagel Boss, more are on the way.
