The search for a missing hiker is in its sixth day in the Sierra Nevada foothills near the town of Arnold.
Ann Herford, 66, was last seen on Sunday, Nov. 12, and was reported missing when she failed to show up for work at Adventist Health in Sonora, the Calaveras County sheriff’s office said.
Herford is a traveling nurse from Michigan and had been staying alone at a motel in Sonora. During breakfast with a friend on Nov. 11, she had expressed an interest in hiking during her stay in California.
On Wednesday, Nov. 15, her car was found at a trailhead in the Lakemont Pines subdivision, about a 30-mile drive from Sonora. The trail network there connects to the Arnold Rim Trail, a meandering 23-mile route south of Arnold, most of it in the Stanislaus National Forest. The search is focusing on that trail.
The search has involved dozens of people on the ground, plus dogs, helicopters and drones, the sheriff’s office said Sunday.
