RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Scam phone calls continue to be a problem for people all over the nation.

Customers of one local business are on high alert after recent reports of scam calls to get money and customer’s personal information over the phone.

Black Hills Energy has received reports from customers of attempted scam calls where they are told their bill is late and service will be turned off if they don’t pay immediately over the phone.

Scott Livingston, the security awareness program manager at Black Hills Energy, says if you are unsure of a call you are receiving, hang up, and check with the company to be safe.

“If an individual receives an unexpected phone call in a situation like this, the best thing they can do is contact the customer service department of the company involved, and in this situation with Black Hills Energy, they can also go to our online account and check the status of their account,” said Livingston.

Livingston adds that if you become a victim of this or any scam, contact your local authorities to report it.
