Saturday Sports: Booster club softball tournament takes place at Watertown Fairgrounds

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The Watertown Cyclones Annual Booster Club Varsity Softball Tournament took place at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds on Saturday.

One of the opening contests pitted the host Cyclones against Harrisville.

The game was scoreless in the bottom of the 1st when Montanna Evans hits a shot to center field and it’s off to the races. Evans slides into 3rd and the throw gets away, allowing her to score: 1-0 Watertown after 1 inning.

At the top of the 2nd, Harrisville ties it when Madison Kackison flies out to short. On the play, Makenna Rose tags and advances to 3rd. The throw gets away, allowing her to score: 1-all.

But Watertown goes on to beat Harrisville 11-4.

In the other early contest, Hermon DeKalb met Belleville Henderson.

The Panthers were up 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd when Kadence Millard singles to right. Courtney Hanson scores: 2-0.

Then it was Mariyah Houghton with the base hit to left. Avery Pritchard and Lilly Gillette score: 4-0 Belleville Henderson.

At the top of the 4th, Hermon DeKalb gets on the board via a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-1.

Belleville Henderson goes on to beat Hermon DeKalb 11-8.

In non-league baseball from the Fairgrounds, Beaver River met Pulaski.

At the top of the 1st, Beaver River pitcher Ayshur Gerow gets the strikeout. The game was scoreless after 1.

At the top of the 2nd, Pulaski gets on the board when Abraham Yerdon hits a shot to right that goes for extra bases. Connor Payne scores: 1-0.

Pulaski beats Beaver River 10-3.

Saturday morning at Rand Field, the Watertown Little League opened its 68th season.

The league is comprised of 19 teams 6 major league, 6 minor league, 5 t-ball, and 2 softball teams.

225 kids are taking part with ages ranging from 4 to 12 years old.

The league is hoping this season will hold some added excitement with a new addition.

”Yeah, we’re working with a local sponsor, Jake Johnson Properties, to potentially add lights to our field. It is our hope that we can get lights on our field some point after the season and potentially have fall baseball here at our facility,” said Derek Ward, President of Watertown Little League.

Down the road at Gordon Cole Field in Rodman, the South Jeff Little League held opening ceremonies for its 52nd season.

The league is made up of 32 teams and 399 kids split up into baseball and softball.

Baseball with U-6, U-8, U-10, and U-12 divisions, and softball comprised of a major and minor league division.

Saturday’s festivities honored a longtime supporter of South Jeff Little League that recently passed away: Clint Clark.

”Clint meant a tremendous amount to South Jefferson Little League over the years. He was a mentor, he was a leader, he was a coach, he was very special to South Jefferson Little League. He really devoted a lot of time down at Tyner Field,” said Matt Burdick, President of South Jeff Little League.

On the lacrosse field, Watertown hosted West Genesee in girls’ non-league lacrosse action.

Watertown opens the scoring when Alex Macutek scores off the free position: 1-0 Cyclones.

A bit later, it’s Macutek with her 2nd of the game off another free position: 2-0.

West Genesee beats Watertown 10-7.

In the Women’s NAC Lacrosse Semifinals from SUNY Canton, the top-seeded Roos hosted SUNY Polytechnic.

The Roos get on the board first when Maddy Caron scores on the doorstep: 1-0.

Late in the 1st, Caroline Nappi scores on the breakaway: 2-0 Roos after 1 period.

In the 2nd, Caron scores her 2nd of the game to make it 3-0.

The Roos move on to the championship game with a 16-3 win.
