ANDREA ATZENI has three good rides at Newcastle this afternoon, with OBSIDIAN KNIGHT of particular interest in the 1m2f Class 3 handicap (3.10). He often comes from off the pace – tactics ideally suited to Newcastle – and Atzeni gave him a patient ride when successful on the gelding at Lingfield back in October, the only previous occasion he has been on board. GREAT BEDWYN, in-form Atzeni’s first mount (2.35), took a big step forward on his second outing when a 66-1 third at Lingfield and could go well, while THE GATEKEEPER looks a likely improver now that he’s been gelded ahead of his all-weather debut (4.20). CHELMSFORD 8.00

THE BAY WARRIOR

THE BAY WARRIOR was only fourth of the eight runners when heavily backed into 11-8 favouritism for a Class 6 course and distance handicap last month but can be forgiven that defeat on account of the ride he received. Inexperienced claimer Rose Dawes rushed him up on the outside to press the early pace three wide into the first bend and simply used up the petrol too soon. Rhys Clutterbuck, whose record on Mark Usher’s five-year-old, stands at 2124 (1-4) takes over and he can bounce back tonight. Buy in the Spreadex 50-25-10 market.
