Hong Kong is expanding its tourism opportunities by welcoming solo travellers from eight additional mainland Chinese cities to explore the island. Also known as the Individual Visit Scheme, Hong Kong’s solo travel scheme aims to boost the hotel and retail industry by attracting independent explorers from China.

Initially launched in 2003, the Individual Visit Scheme allows visitors from mainland Chinese cities to travel independently across Hong Kong, without joining mandatory tour groups. Earlier this year, the scheme was expanded to residents of Xi’an and Qingdao, and now, eight more cities have joined the list.

With the new additions, 59 mainland Chinese cities are now part of the Individual Visit Scheme. Residents of these cities can now plan solo trips to Hong Kong and Macau.

The eight cities being added to the programme include Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Taiyuan in Shanxi Province, Hohhot in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Harbin in Heilongjiang Province, Lanzhou in Gansu Province, Xining in Qinghai Province, Yinchuan in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and Urumqi in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, reported Reuters.

Previously, it was mandatory for visitors from these Chinese cities to travel in groups to Hong Kong and Macau. However, they will be free to plan their vacations independently and stay for up to seven days starting May 27, 2024.

Under Hong Kong’s solo travel scheme, residents of these Chinese cities will be eligible for four types of endorsements, along with two for Macau. The validity of the endorsements can range from three months to a year, and they are eligible for one or two entries maximum, granting only seven days of travel at a time.
