Vacaville resident Aliah Osbun, an Explorer for the Vacaville Fire Department, recently traveled to Manhattan to celebrate high school graduation and pay tribute to the fallen 9/11 firefighters. Osbun received a tour of the Ground Zero fire department and is in training to become a firefighter/paramedic.

Solano County High School Wins Spring 2024 Vocabulary Bowl

Buckingham Collegiate Charter Academy has claimed the top spot in its division in the Spring 2024 Vocabulary Bowl, marking the school’s fifth consecutive win. This win occurred after a highly competitive season drew more than 160,000 students from 1,800 schools.

Students at the Solano County high school mastered 50,417 words, placing them first in Division III and third overall in the United States.

Solano County Resident named Finalist in 2024 Congressional Art Competition

Lilly Bertlin was named as the Solano County Finalist in the 2024 Congressional Art Competition.

Each spring, Members of Congress host the Congressional Art Competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent across their districts and our nation. Since the Artistic Discovery Competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

“I always look forward to the Congressional Art Competition as it gives my colleagues, Capitol visitors, and me the opportunity to appreciate the incredible talents of our district’s high school artists,” said U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson. “Congratulations to Napa County’s Taylor Webster on being named as this year’s winner from California’s Fourth District and congratulations to Lilly Bertlin on being named as this year’s Solano County finalist.”

Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The winning works are displayed for one year in the halls of the U.S. Capitol.

 

WCWHS Choirs participate in the San Francisco Heritage Music Festival April 19-20.

  • The WCW Treble Chorus earned 2nd place in the treble chorus category with a Silver/Excellent rating.
  • The Sylvan Singers earned 1st place in the show choir category with a rating of Gold/Superior.
  • The Sylvan Choir earned 1st place in the mixed choir category with a rating of Gold/Superior.
  • The Sylvan Choir and Sylvan Singers earned Adjudicator Awards for scores of 95 or higher out of 100.

Additionally, Jei Farner earned a prestigious Festival Vocalist Award, awarded to one singer out of all the middle and high school choirs that competed.

Ani Mendoza earned the Director’s Award, awarded to one student out of all the bands, orchestras and choirs, including middle and high schools, that participated. Mendoza received the award in recognition of her community leadership and character excellence.

The WCWHS Sylvan Choir earned a place at the invitation-only Gold Heritage Music Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2025.
