There are four ITV1 races to enjoy on Saturday afternoon from Newbury. The big betting contest of the day is the concluding extended 2m Betfair Premier Handicap Hurdle. The Grade 2 extended 2m 7f Denman Chase, where Shishkin is set to feature, is another highlight.
In a week when some of the action on courses in the UK and Ireland has been affected by the weather, with several meetings abandoned, our expert has come up with a selection for every race on the ITV1 broadcast.

Newbury, 1.30 – Betfair Serial Winners Fund Handicap Hurdle (3m)
Nigel Twiston-Davies trained the winner of this race in 2013 and 2016, and his 2024 representative EQUINUS makes plenty of each-way appeal in this competitive 12-runner Class 3 staying handicap hurdle. The six-year-old is open to further improvement after only 10 starts and is dropping in grade after finishing fifth in a Class 2 contest at Sandown in early December.
The selection registered a Racing Post rating of 131 when coming clear to win over this trip at Aintree on his seasonal reappearance in late October, so a 63-day break and a mark of 124 should prove no barrier to further success.
Selection: Equinus @ 17/2 with Betfred
Newbury, 2.05 – Grade 2 Betfair Denman Chase (2m 7½f)
SHISHKIN is representing Nicky Henderson 46 days after his excellent but luckless effort in the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day. He stumbled and unseated today’s jockey Nico de Boinville shortly after two out when yet to be asked a serious question in a one-length lead.
The 10-year-old Sholokhov gelding is an admittedly quirky sort, but he is upwards of 8lb clear of his four rivals on the book – and almost three miles on testing ground around the Berkshire course should be suitable enough for him to confirm his superiority over the opposition.
Selection: Shishkin @ 4/6 with Betfred
Newbury, 2.40 – Grade 2 Betfair Exchange Game Spirit Chase (extended 2m)
It is only fair to admit that I have been going around in circles a fair bit with this trappy six-runner field before suggesting that one of the two horses at the front of the market is likely to provide the answer.
Token preference is for EDWARDSTONE, who has the top overall form and the best this season as well, but confidence is not exactly sky-high for a runner who has not won since December 2022 at Sandown in the Tingle Creek (when Shishkin was third). Boothill may take advantage should the selection fail to leave his latest Kempton fourth way behind.
Selection: Edwardstone @ 13/8 with Betfred
Newbury, 3.15 – Betfair Premier Handicap Hurdle (extended 2m)
Harry Fry’s representative ALTOBELLI is an each-way suggestion in the big-field feature handicap hurdle in Berkshire, with Betfred offering place returns down to the sixth horse home. Twenty-five runners are declared.
The six-year-old is one of the least exposed horses in the field after only six starts, and a mark of 132 looks exploitable having registered a Racing Post rating of 139 when second in a similar contest on testing ground at Ascot on his reappearance in November.
Selection: Altobelli @ 7/1 with Betfred
