HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Students at Elkmont High School are giving to children around the world in a creative way.

Art teacher Leah Pierce says she was looking for a project to promote global awareness for her students.

She said she found the memory project, which began in 2004.

The project allows students to send artwork to children in orphanages, in poverty, or living as refugees.

Pierce said it’s encouraging to see her students excited to share their art with kids beyond Elkmont.

“I think the thing I was most proud of was how much they cared about it after they watched the video and i explained what we were doing,” she said. “They put so much heart into it and I already knew that about these students that they’re very kind-hearted and hardworking.”

Pierce says it’s a great opportunity for kids to learn about different people, since Elkmont is a small town.
