Did you know working for the Iowa State Fair gets you free entry? Here’s a list of jobs

Want to enjoy the Iowa State Fair and make some extra money? The fair is hosting a job fair to recruit seasonal employees for the 11-day event with over 1 million people in attendance.

You can join the fun by working with livestock or making cookies at Barksdale’s State Fair Cookies. There is an average of 1,600 seasonal or fair-time staff members each year.

Here’s what you need to know about working for the Iowa State Fair.

What Iowa State Fair jobs are available?

The State Fair is looking for temporary employees for seven different departments. Positions are available in:

  • Admissions
  • Concessions/Barksdale’s State Fair Cookies
  • Maintenance
  • Custodial
  • Parking
  • Livestock Control
  • Security

When is the Iowa State Fair job interview session?

Interviews for Iowa State Fair jobs are from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. The interviews will be at the Elwell Family Center. All candidates must be 16 years or older to interview for a position, although some positions will hire 14 and 15-year-olds.

How do I apply for seasonal employment at the Iowa State Fair?

Visit the Iowa State Fair’s website and click on the “About” tab. There you will find a link for employment, which has the various job descriptions and an application form.

When does the Iowa State Fair open?

The 2024 Iowa State Fair is open from 8 a.m. until midnight Aug. 8-17. There are no on-site ticket sales and no re-entry after 10 p.m. each night.

On the last day of the fair, Aug. 18, it is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with no on-site ticket sales and re-entry after 7 p.m.

How much do Iowa State Fair jobs pay?

Most temporary jobs at the Iowa State Fair pay $12-$14 per hour, with some specialized positions paying $20 per hour, according to an Iowa State Fair spokesperson. Workers at the State Fair enjoy other perks like free admission and parking.

Can I work for vendors at the Iowa State Fair?

Yes, but you must contact the individual vendor for an interview or to see if they are hiring. The Iowa State Fair does not hire for concessionaires or vendors.
