March is the final month of the regular season for Cal men’s gymnastics.
Bears Hope To Bounce Back In Second Tri-Meet Of Season
BERKELEY – Following a week of rest for most of the team, California men’s gymnastics is ready to hit the floor once more on Saturday as it travels back down to Palo Alto for the second time this season. Stanford, the nation’s No. 2-ranked squad, will welcome both the Golden Bears and Illinois to Burnham Pavilion for a tri-meet at 4 p.m. PT.
After a very strong start to the season, Cal has been ravaged by injuries to several of its top performers, who are gradually recovering and on track to return for this final month of the regular season. The Bears have not been without their successes, however; two gymnasts (senior Noah Sano and freshman Theodor Gadderud) have each received MPSF weekly awards this season, while three other Bears (junior Noah Newfeld, junior Aidan Li and freshman Khalen Curry) have set program top-three marks, including a school record on vault from Curry.
In Cal’s last meet, a virtual showing with Springfield College, the Bears posted wins in five events, including two apiece for Newfeld and Gadderud.
Stanford is currently top in the nation on still rings, vault and parallel bars, as well as having five men on its roster selected to the U.S. National Team last weekend (Asher Hong, Ian Lasic-Ellis, Brody Malone, Riley Loos and Khoi Young). Illinois has its own representative on the national team in senior Ian Skirkey.
